New Year Light Show in Puumala

To celebrate the turn of the year, a brand-new light artwork will make the Puumala Bridge Tower shine!

Mon 29 Dec – Sat 10 Jan
Shows daily every hour from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM (duration approx. 20 minutes).
On New Year’s Eve, 31 Dec, shows will run until midnight.

The spectacular light artwork and its mesmerizing soundscape can be enjoyed at the foot of the bridge tower, along the lakeside boulevard, or at the harbor square. With the panoramic elevator, you can rise up into the artwork itself and celebrate the New Year on Lake Saimaa in a truly unprecedented way!

The work arriving in Puumala has been designed and realized by light artist Niko Tiainen.

“INITIATION” is an audiovisual poem based on post-processed improvised melodies and abstract, code-based visuals. The piece is created using projected video mapping techniques. Niko Tiainen is a Finnish multidisciplinary artist specializing in outdoor interactive projection mapping as well as video, light, and sound installations. His works have been presented in exhibitions and art festivals in over 20 countries, including Ars Electronica (Linz, 2020), Light Box New York Gallery (NYC, 2020), and Neo Shibuya Gallery (Tokyo, 2021). Now, for the first time, we get to experience this new kind of light art on Lake Saimaa.

* The permanent Saimaa Lighthouse light artwork of the Puumala Bridge Tower will be switched off for the New Year light show from 28 Dec 2025 to 10 Jan 2026. The general lighting of the bridge tower will also be dimmed, taking safety and access routes into account. Please avoid looking directly into the light projector at close range.
