UNICEF Child Friendly municipality

UNICEF Finland chose Puumala as a new Child Friendly Municipality model co-operation partner on August 31st, 2019.

The Child Friendly Municipality model aims to reinforce children’s rights in the decision-making processes of the municipality and in organising services. The model is based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the international UNICEF Child Friendly Cities Initiative.

Puumala started to implement the Child Friendly Municipality model in spring 2019. A coordinating group was set up in the municipality, which includes representatives from the municipality, South Savonia social and health services, the church, various associations and a youth delegation, totalling 18 representatives. The coordinating group establishes the opening circumstances, sets the aims for development and begins development work. If development work proceeds according to the aims of the model, UNICEF may grant Puumala municipality Child Friendly Municipality status in spring 2021.
